Nicholas J. Ganjei
The Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas meets their new Acting United States Attorney, Nicholas J. Ganjei. The appointment of U.S. Attorney Ganjei was made under the Vacancies Reform Act on January 20, 2021, following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Cox. A new United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas shall be appointed on November 16, 2021, or prior to the said date, provided that a presidential appointee has been confirmed to the position by the U.S. Senate.

Education and Bar Admission
Nicholas J. Ganjei is a career federal prosecutor who has committed his entire professional life to public service. He is a graduate of the American University in Washington, D.C., and the University of California, Berkeley – School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate. United States Attorney Ganjei is an active member of the State Bar of California on June 7, 2006.
Legal Career
As a Law Clerk, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei began his legal career serving under the Honorable Richard Allen Griffin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Furthermore, U.S. Attorney Ganjei also clerked for the Honorable Ralph R. Erickson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, who at the time was a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota.
For 12 years, beginning in 2008, U.S. Attorney Ganjei has dedicated and focused his legal career on prosecuting numerous cases, particularly human trafficking, narcotics, and organized crime. With over a decade of service as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico from 2008 until 2020, Nicholas Ganjei has developed extensive experience investigating and prosecuting cases involving fraud, public corruption, and other white-collar prosecutions. U.S. Attorney Ganjei has previously been assigned to both the Albuquerque – Main Office and the Las Cruces – Branch Office of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
Former U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson has expressed his commendation towards U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei for being a dedicated and talented prosecutor of the District of New Mexico, as well as for having established an outstanding reputation for the Office throughout the past decade of his service.
In 2008, U.S. Attorney Ganjei also joined the Office of Legal Policy of the Department of Justice in Washington as a Nominations and Policy Counsel. In this capacity, he worked in relation to nominations and criminal justice matters, with a mission to implement significant policy initiatives and handle the special projects of the Department of Justice.
On June 22, 2020, U.S. Attorney Ganjei was appointed as the First Assistant United States Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Cox of the Eastern District of Texas. Nicholas Ganjei is an acclaimed prosecutor and servant leader who is also proficient in personal diplomacy.
Prosecutions Handled by U.S. Attorney Ganjei
Despite being a part of the Office of the United States Attorney for Eastern District of Texas for only less than a year, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei has handled several prosecutions, including the case of the 53-year-old Longview man who has been indicted for drug trafficking violations. The defendant has been charged with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Anabolic Steroids and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap to 19 months in federal prison. Moreover, the $459,285.25 that was illegally obtained by the defendant by selling anabolic steroids online has been forfeited, along with seven firearms and a 2016 Ford F-350 pickup.
Another prosecution that U.S. Attorney Ganjei has handled is the case involving the bankruptcy fraud scheme executed by a 47-year-old woman of Northern Texas. The defendant pleaded guilty to Aggravated Identity Theft, Bankruptcy Fraud, and Wire Fraud and was subsequently sentenced to 42 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant. Evidence showed that the defendant had participated in a fraudulent scheme attacking the apartment complex where she resided at the time and had filed a bankruptcy petition under the name and social security details of another individual without the knowledge or authorization of said person. An order for restitution remains a possibility for the case.
Teachings
U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei is an exemplary career prosecutor who has been named under the Forty under 40 list of honorees. His practical skills and knowledge in the legal field were also shared with other individuals who wished to take on a legal career. U.S. Attorney Ganjei previously taught at both collegiate and law school level, tackling matters involving civil, criminal, and constitutional law.
Office Jurisdiction
After being second in command in the Office of the United States Attorney in August 2020, Nicholas J. Ganjei now assumes the role of being the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official of the Eastern District of Texas. In this capacity, he remains responsible for the 43 counties within the district’s jurisdiction, including the four million residents of the Eastern District of Texas. As the Acting U.S. Attorney, Nicholas Ganjei shall oversee a staff of approximately 120 employees, including the 55 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel across the division offices of the district. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas includes six fully staffed offices in Beaumont, Lufkin, Plano, Sherman, Texarkana, and Tyler. Apart from managing and overseeing the Office, U.S. Attorney Ganjei shall also be responsible for handling all federal criminal prosecutions, along with all civil litigations within the district that serve the interest of the United States. The Office shall also collect the debts owed to the United States.
