Overseeing 13 Southeast Louisiana parishes, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Peter G. Strasser, is the top federal law enforcement officer in New Orleans. Nominated by President Donald Trump on June 20, 2018, attorney Strasser was confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on August 28, 2018. He was, subsequently, sworn into the office by United States District Chief Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown on September 10, 2018.

 

Educational Background

Peter G. Strasser earned his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Arts in European History at the University of Virginia in 1976, graduating with distinction, and received his Juris Doctorate at the Washington & Lee University, in 1979. Mr. Strasser also studied German Language and Literature at the University of Vienna.

 

Early Career and Significant Litigated Matters

With 18 years of service from 1984 to 2002, Mr. Strasser served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Louisiana. He headed the Economic Crimes and Organized Crime Section. He prosecuted numerous cases focusing on complex fraud, international drug trafficking, corruption, and customs. One of his significant litigated matters involved the former Louisiana Governor being indicted in an extortion case of hospital licensing fraud and racketeering, in 1988. Furthermore, Mr. Strasser has served a Parliamentary Election Monitor with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to supervise and organize the elections, which later on led to the 2003 Rose Revolution in the Republic of Georgia. Later on, Mr. Strasser became the Anti-Corruption Monitor for Georgia, as a part of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

 

Legal Career

In 2002, Peter Strasser began to serve overseas as a Resident Legal Advisor for the Department of Justice – Overseas Prosecutorial Development Assistance and Training at U.S. Embassies in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa. His work at the DOJ Legal Attaché focused on implementing anti-corruption programs. Additionally, he worked at the Office of Internal Affairs in Washington, D.C., prosecuting cross-border criminal investigations. From 2002 to 2013, Mr. Strasser’s work revolved around improving prosecutorial capacity, developing new criminal procedure codes, monitoring and strengthening independent judiciaries, and combating high-priority criminal activity.

 

Professional Honors and Awards

Prior to his appointment as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Atty Strasser worked as a Partner at the Chaffe McCall, LLP, for five years – from 2013 to 2018. He was an Attorney for the white-collar criminal defense and international groups and government investigations. Attorney Strasser has also worked on matters including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, making him an exemplary trial lawyer with a variety of litigation and compliance experience. Service to the U.S. Navy, and Publications

Having served worldwide for 30 years as the Captain of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps at the United States Navy Reserve from 1927 to 2009, Atty Strasser has received honors and awards such as the Legion of Merit, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Teachings and Volunteer Experience

A man of honorable public service, U.S. Attorney Strasser has had volunteer experiences such as being an Advisor to Malawi Prosecution Services at the International Senior Lawyers Project from 2014 to 2016, an Adjunct Professor of Law for Trial Advocacy at the Tulane University from 2014 to 2018 and becoming a part of the International Business Committee at the World Trade Center of New Orleans, Inc., also from 2014 to 2018. He has taught courses including Money Laundering for Investigators, and the FCPA Compliance Audits: Lessons from Recent Investigations.

 

Bar and Court Associations 

As a former Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, and a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, Mr. Strasser remains an active member of the Virginia State Bar and the Louisiana State Bar. He is also a member of both the Army and the Navy Club.

 

Office Jurisdiction and Current Work

Being the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Mr. Strasser is responsible for supervising the office, which manages civil cases involving the United States. He recovers debts owed to the United States. Moreover, he also currently serves at the United States Attorney General’s Advisory Subcommittees on Cyber and Intellectual Property, and Terrorism and National Security, assisting on matters involving asset forfeiture, and anti-corruption enforcement in both the United States and overseas.
