Prim F. Escalona State's Attorney for Northern District of Alabama

Appointment

Prim F. Escalona has been appointed as interim United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, following former U.S. Attorney Jay Town. Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 546, Attorney General William P. Barr announced on July 16, 2020, that Ms. Escalona would take over the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama.

 

Education, Honors and Awards, and Membership

A magna cum laude graduate, U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona received her undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from the Birmingham-Southern College. Subsequently, she earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law, graduating summa cum laude and receiving the Order of the Coif. Furthermore, Ms. Escalona received the Harrison Award for Excellence in Research. She was also a recipient of the Dean Thomas W. Christopher Award for her contributions to the Law School and legal education. U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona was a former member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society. 

 

Legal Career

Straight of law school, U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona started her legal career as a Law Clerk at the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Montgomery, under the Honorable Judge William Pryor in 2008. A year later, she joined a private practice and became an Associate at the Birmingham-based Maynard Cooper & Gale for about a year and a half, and returning then, in 2013, working for another four years. She has served at the Maynard Cooper & Gale for over five years, divided into two stints.

In 2011, U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona began her service at the Alabama Office of the Attorney General, where she worked as a Deputy Solicitor General for over a year, before becoming a full-time Visiting Associate Professor at The University of Alabama School of Law in June of 2012, serving until May of 2013.

Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama, Prim Escalona worked at the United States Department of Justice, where she was a Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy and was a Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legislative Affairs. In this capacity, Ms. Escalona was responsible for overseeing the rendering of legal advice to the United States Attorney General, and more importantly, supervises the development and coordination of Departmental Policy. Furthermore, U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona held the responsibility of overseeing the development and implementation of strategies for the strengthening and advancement of the legislative initiatives of the Department of Justice. Ms. Escalona served at the Department of Justice for approximately three years, from 2017 to 2020.

 

Significant Works

U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona’s service to the Department of Justice has been significant. She has played an integral role in the implementation of the Project Safe Neighborhoods – the anti-crime initiative of the Department of Justice. Moreover, she has been assigned to several leadership roles, in which she was able to build strong working relationships with the local law enforcement unit. During her service at the Department of Justice, she also managed to help establish and maintain the State and Local Law Enforcement Coordination Section, which was an expansive legislative portfolio of the Department.

 

Office Jurisdiction

As the interim United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Prim F. Escalona is responsible for the prosecution of federal criminal offenses in the district and representing the United States in civil prosecutions and collecting debts owed to the state. Moreover, she oversees about 98 employees, composed 48 Assistant United States Attorneys, 38 support staff, and 12 contract support personnel.
