Robert J. Higdon, Jr. currently holds the office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District North Carolina. With more than three decades of a steady career in Law, Higdon is a well-known name in the Judicial System of the United States. Born and bred in Greensboro, Higdon is also a member of the North Carolina State Bar and the State Bar of Georgia.
Robert J. Higdon, Jr. started his career as an associate in Harman, Owens, Saunders, and Sweeny. He excelled in his practice in a short time. He also acquired the position of Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of North Carolina, where he worked for 11 years. In 2002, Higdon became the Criminal Chief at the United States Attorney’s Office and held the position for the next 11 years. For a short amount of time, Higdon also worked as a Senior Litigation Counsel at the United States Office of Eastern District of North Carolina.
Higdon would return to the office again in 2017 as a United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina after receiving a nomination by President Donald Trump. But before his current position, he became a Trial Attorney in the Public Integrity Section and then a partner at the Williams Mullen law firm.

Professional Accomplishment
In his current role as a U.S. Attorney, Higdon is the leading federal law enforcement officer in the Eastern District of North Carolina. The district includes 44 counties. Higdon supervises a staff of 108 employees. Together, they work on prosecuting federal crimes such as acts of terrorism, child exploitation, narcotics, public corruption, and firearms. The office also represents the United States in civil cases and collects from those who owe to the State.
During his lengthy law career, Higdon has prosecuted, as well as supervised many distinct cases. Various criminal cases, white-collar crimes, false statements lawsuits, fraud cases, public corruption cases, Foreign Corrupt Practices, money laundering affairs, theft of government property, violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act, and many more were brought to court by Higdon.
One of Higdon’s most high-profile cases involved the federal prosecution of a campaign finance fraud, implicating Democrat John Edwards. Another prominent case of Higdon that garnered lots of attention includes the investigation that saw the return of the stolen original copy of North Carolina’s Bill of Rights after more than 130 years.
Education
Robert J. Higdon, Jr. did his bachelor’s in 1985 from Wake Forest University. He then received his Juris Doctor from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1989. In Law School, Higdon worked for the Wake Forest Law Review and was a member of the Moot Court.
Role in the Community
Higdon continues to devote lots of his time and passion for seeing justice brought in court. His efforts and his seniority got recognition when he became the fourth in the line of succession in the Executive Order titled ‘Providing an Order of Succession Within the Department of Justice’ issued by President Trump on March 31, 2017. At the moment, Higdon serves in the position of great public trust, and he makes sure that he never lets the people of North Carolina down.
