Ronald A. Parsons, Jr.
Ronald A. Parsons Jr. was appointed into office by President Donald Trump as the District of South Dakota’s 42nd U.S. Attorney on January 5th, 2018. He is now the chief federal prosecutor of S.D. and all its constituents. The span of his territory and legal jurisdiction includes nine Indian Reservations.
Atty. Parsons oversees all 900,000 residents of the District of South Dakota, with the help of 32 lawyers and more than 60 non-legal personnel across the three district offices in Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Pierre.
On September 11th in 2017, Ron Parsons Jr was nominated by the President as a U.S. Attorney. The Senate confirmed this nomination on December 20th, 2017. Currently, as one of his roles as the U.S. Attorney of S.D., he’s part of the Advisory Committee on Terrorism and National Security. Atty. Parsons is also part of the following subcommittees: Native American Issues and Elder Justice.

Law Career
Shortly after graduating from law school, Ronald A. Parsons Jr. assisted Hon. Roger L. Wollman, the Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit’s judge at the time, with a federal appellate clerkship. His work as a judicial law clerk for Hon. Wollman became his first taste of public legal service before he went into private practice.
In August 1998, he became a partner of a law firm in Sioux Falls named Johnson Janklow Abdallah Reiter & Parsons LLP. He headed his firm’s Appellate Department. During his time in private practice, he managed a wide range of complex civil litigation cases for both federal and state courts.
In his firm, he oversaw and managed over a hundred appeals, primarily in the United States Court of Appeals and in South Dakota’s Supreme Court. He appeared as counsel of record in two of the cases he handled. These two cases were heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. At Johnson Janklow Abdallah Reiter & Parsons LLP, he practiced privately for 20 years.
Atty. Parsons, before his current position as the U.S. State Attorney for the District of South Dakota, served in Minnehaha County, SD, as a Limited Deputy State’s Attorney.
Awards
Atty Ron Parsons was awarded a Star Quilt for his breakthrough case in 2015 involving the Lakota people. His efforts on behalf of their religious freedom in one of his previous cases in 2014 paved the way for him to be the recipient of such a prestigious award.
In 2016, he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. This association of esteemed lawyers was the country’s preeminent national association recognizing various lawyer’s distinguished appellate advocacy.
Educational Background
Ronald A. Parsons Jr. graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he received his bachelor’s degree in English. He then studied at the University of South Dakota School of Law, where he received his law degree and graduated with Sterling Honors. He was admitted to the state bar in 1998.
