Steven D. Weinhoeft State's Attorney Southern District of Illinois

Steven D. Weinhoeft is the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois for the United States Department of Justice. He is a Springfield based Federal and State attorney who has litigation experience of nearly twenty-three years.

Weinhoeft was judicially appointed as the chief federal law enforcement officer of the Southern District of Illinois. His tenure as the U.S. Attorney commenced on July 23, 2018. He was appointed as the Acting U.S. Attorney after United States Attorney, Donald S. Boyce resigned from his post in July 2018.

 

Primary Duties

As the U.S. Attorney, Steven D. Weinhoeft is serving the district that has around 1.2 million people. He serves as the principal litigator for the Northern District of Illinois, which has its main office in Fairview Heights. It has 38 counties, including Jackson, Clay, Bond, Fayette, Madison, Jersey, Hamilton, Monroe, and Pope counties.

The office, which also has branch offices in Benton and East St. Louis, looks after the prosecution of federal felonies like terrorism, robberies, public corruption, homicides, narcotics, cybercrime, and fraud in the district. Attorney John Lausch is the chief federal law enforcement officer and defends civil cases and the tax affairs of the Government.

 

Law Career

Steven D. Weinhoeft served as a Law Clerk at the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit for Judge Kent A. Jordan. Weinhoeft clerked for him from August 2011 to August 2012. From August 2010 to August 2011, he was a Law Clerk for Judge Robert B. Kugler at the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Before taking over the post of U.S. Attorney of Southern District of Illinois, he has gained practicing experience in the Illinois Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court, Central District of Illinois, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Weinhoeft is associated with United States DOJ since February 19, 2008. He has served as the First Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice from January 2016 to July 2018. He was the First Assistant State’s Attorney in Illinois Sangamon County, where he served in Springfield. During his tenure in the Department of Justice, he was also the Chief of the Criminal Division. He has experience of more than eleven years in a state prosecution.

Steven D. Weinhoeft was associated with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program. He has been a federal prosecutor since 2008. As the federal prosecutor, his practice concentrated mainly on cases related to white-collar crimes, public corruption, and drug trafficking collusions, both multi-district and transnational.

During his state prosecution tenure, he has handled multiple violent crimes including first-degree murder cases, offensive criminal sexual assault, robberies including arm possession, and DUI reckless homicide., and many others. U.S. Attorney Weinhoeft has also managed collateral responsibilities associated with cyber-crimes, crisis management, and national security.
