Timothy J. Shea
Timothy J. Shea is the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for the U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Shea is an American attorney with a stretched career in public service. It included both federal and state Government services.
Shea, at the post of the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer, handles various federal felonies, within the District of Columbia. He also is responsible for the civil actions and the tax affairs of the Government. He also maintains the United States Attorney Office of Columbia, which is the largest USAO office. Jessie K. Liu earlier held the position. Shea was appointed as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia by the Attorney General William Barr on January 30, 2020. Shea has been a close confidant to Barr since 1991. He has served Barr then as an associate deputy attorney general during the George Bush Government.
During his early law career, Mr. Shea has worked as a private corporate lawyer. He has worked in an international firm, Bingham McCutchen LLP. He has also worked with the global law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. Mr. Shea has even been a part of counsel offering advisory on law enforcement operations, criminal, and civil matters concerning the Department of Justice, for the U.S. Attorney, before being chosen as the U.S. Attorney. His major stint was the Operation Relentless Pursuit. The operation was aimed to cut down on violent crimes in seven United States cities.
He has worked for the U.S. Congress. Senator Susan Collins was the chairman under whom Mr. Shea worked as a Chief Counsel and also served as the Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
Between the years 1992 to 1997, Mr. Shea served as the Assistant United States Attorney in Virginia. He handled the prosecution of federal felonies of violent crimes, tax fraud, civil rights, fraud, and drug trafficking. Between the years 1999 to 2001, Shea served as the chief of the Public Protection Bureau of the Attorney General’s Office in Massachusetts. He managed state cases related to consumer protection, civil rights, regulated industries, telecommunications, energy, and elder protection. He was also the chief counsel and staff director to the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
Under Silvio O. Conte, Shea was a part of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee professional staff. Mr. Shea has contributed to the House Appropriations Committee. He has also worked as a lobbyist. Shea was the American Criminal Law Review’s senior staff member.
Timothy J. Shea joined the Boston College, from where he completed his undergraduate degree Bachelor of Arts – Political science and Government. He completed his degree in 1982. He also earned his Juris Doctor degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in the year 1991. The University elected him to the Order of the Coif.
Timothy was given magna cum laude, the second-highest level of academic excellence from Georgetown University Law Center and Boston College. He has also been awarded an academic scholarship at Boston College. He received the Kenealy Award for Academic Excellence from the Boston College.
