Tina L. Nommay
The very first woman to lead the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Tina L. Nommay, will begin serving as the interim Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official. According to the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney shall serve as a temporary replacement and perform duties as the Acting U.S. Attorney in the Office upon the resignation of a presidentially appointed U.S. Attorney.

Appointment as the Acting U.S. Attorney
Consequent to the stepping down of former U.S. Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch in December of 2020, then-First Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary T. Bell stepped up and served as the Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana. As a result of the change in leadership in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tina Nommay was tasked to be second-in-command to the outgoing Acting U.S. Attorney Gary Bell. Shortly after being promoted, interim Top Federal Prosecutor Bell tendered his letter of resignation to President-elect Joe Biden in order to take the position as a Clerk of Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Subsequently, pursuant to the Vacancies Reform Act, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Nommay was named the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana on June 7, 2021. Interim Top Federal Prosecutor Tina L. Nommay is expected to temporarily lead the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana as its Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official until a new U.S. Attorney has been appointed and confirmed by President-elect Joe Biden and by the Senate, respectively.
Educational Background and Bar Admissions
Acting U.S. Attorney Tina Nommay holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from Michigan State University, from where Ms. Nommay graduated in June of 1984. She earned her Juris Doctorate from the Valparaiso University School of Law in May 1987 and acquired a license in the State of Arizona and Illinois in 1988. A year later, U.S. Attorney Nommay got admitted into the Michigan State Bar. Currently, the status of her membership in the State Bar of Michigan and Arizona is inactive. United States Attorney Nommay is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Legal Career
Following her graduation from law school, U.S. Attorney Nommay launched her legal career as a Judicial Law Clerk in the Hammond Division of the Northern District of Indiana, serving in the capacity for two years. Interim Top Federal Prosecutor Tina N. Nommay first became a part of the Office of the United States Attorney for Northern Indiana in 1989. She was initially appointed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Fort Wayne Branch Office, from where she swiftly worked her way up. For three years, U.S. Attorney Nommay served in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney. In 1992, Acting U.S. Attorney Nommay transitioned to the Office’s Criminal Division, where she began investigating and prosecuting an array of criminal cases, including bank robberies, child pornography, illegal drugs, environmental crimes, violations of federal firearm laws, gang crimes, health care fraud and other white-collar crimes, and violent crimes, among other criminal cases. With around 20 years of serving in the Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Tina Nommay was promoted into being the Chief of the Fort Wayne Division Branch Office in 2012. In this position, she was responsible for overseeing and mentoring Assistant U.S. Attorneys, all while handling and managing a series of complex white-collar, firearms, narcotics, and violent crime cases. After another eight years, in October 2020, interim Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official Nommay was named as the Chief of the Criminal Division for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana. For about half a year, U.S. Attorney Nommay supervised the work of over 30 Assistant U.S. Attorneys stationed in the Fort Wayne, Hammond, and South Bend Division Branch Offices.
In December of 2020, Acting U.S. Attorney Tina Nommay was appointed as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana. She served as second-in-command to former Acting U.S. Attorney Gary T. Bell, who was appointed into position on December 19, 2021, and has resigned six months later. As the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Top Federal Prosecutor Nommay oversaw the daily operations of the office and all of the work in the criminal, civil, and administrative divisions of the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana.
Statement by Acting U.S. Attorney Nommay Upon Appointment
Upon her appointment as Acting U.S. Attorney, Tina L. Nommay asserted that she will continue in the course of action in which the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana has long been performing – persistently seeking justice and effectively protecting the citizens of the District through the prosecution of individuals who violate federal law. In addition, she claimed that under her leadership, the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana would not cease to promote public safety throughout the district. She further stated that to fulfill the aforementioned statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Tina Nommay is determined to coordinate the efforts of the Office effectively to federal, state, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies, along with local prosecutors and with civic and community groups.
“I will continue the District’s long tradition of seeking justice and protecting the citizens of the Northern District of Indiana by prosecuting those individuals who violate federal law. My office will continue to promote public safety throughout Northern Indiana by coordinating our efforts with federal, state, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies, local prosecutors, along with civic and community groups,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Nommay.
Office Jurisdiction
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana is currently led by interim Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official Tina L. Nommay. With a staff of approximately 77 employees consisting of 38 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and 29 support personnel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Indiana is responsible for representing the United States government in virtually all litigation within the district, in which the United States is a party. Moreover, the Office shall defend and protect about 2.5 million residents of the district and prosecute over 900 federal crimes annually. Acting U.S. Attorney Tina L. Nommay oversees the four branch offices of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana located in the Cities of Hammond, South Bend, Lafayette, and Fort Wayne. In addition, the Office shall also collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers.
