W. Stephen Muldrow states attorney for the district of puerto rico

United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, the Honorable William Stephen Muldrow, was nominated by President Donald Trump on June 19, 2019, and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on September 26, 2019. U.S. Attorney Muldrow was actually interim U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida prior to appointment to office. He assumed the seat on March 13, 2017, following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III. Atty Muldrow was sworn into office by The Honorable Gustavo Gelpí on October 4, 2019.

 

Education

With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, minor in Spanish, Mr. Muldrow graduated from the Bucknell University in 1986 and received his Juris Doctorate from The American University – Washington College of Law in 1989, graduating as cum laude. W. Stephen Muldrow received his Master’s Degree in Law and International Affairs from The American University School of International Service, also in 1989. He is an active member of the Florida Bar Association.

 

Legal Career

In 1988, Stephen Muldrow began his legal career as a Law Clerk at the United States Marshals Service – Office of Legal Counsel. After law school, he began working at the United States Department of Justice – Tax Division, Civil Trial Section, Northern Region. Attorney Muldrow joined the DOJ through the Honors Program and served in the department for about six years, from 1989 to 1995.

Muldrow has been serving the United States for approximately 32 years, where 23 years of it was spent serving as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, and for the Middle District of Puerto Rico. In 1995, Attorney Muldrow served the District of Puerto Rico, who was also the district’s Lead Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Officer, and who was in charge of the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). He served the district for six years, from 1995 to 2001, before becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida.

In 2013, United States attorney Muldrow was appointed to be a First Assistant U.S. Attorney, still for the Middle District of Florida. During this time, he was under the former U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III, whom he took over as interim U.S. Attorney, following his resignation in 2017. Furthermore, he served the district as the Lead OCDETF Officer, as a Senior Litigation Counsel, and Chief of Major Crimes Section.

 

Significant Litigation Matters

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico, Atty Muldrow served a year as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. W. Stephen Muldrow managed to be the lead prosecutor in the case of John Andrew Welden, a doctor’s son who was pronounced guilty for coercing his ex-girlfriend into taking abortion pills. Welden is now to serve 13 years in prison. Attorney Muldrow was well recognized for this case.

 

Honors and Awards

Muldrow has received several honors and awards, including the Most Outstanding Attorney Award from the Department of Justice Tax Division, which he received in 1992. He has also received five awards for his exemplary work and contribution to the OCDETF, three awards for the Field of Drug Law Enforcement, and four awards for Puerto Rico’s HIDTA Taskforce.

 

Office Jurisdiction

As the incumbent U.S. Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico, Attorney Muldrow shares the responsibility of combating crime and drug trafficking in the district. According to Congresswoman Jennifer González Colón, Stephen Muldrow’s service career in both the Middle District of Florida and the District of Puerto Rico will allow him to continue the complex prosecution operation in the District of Puerto Rico.

Atty Muldrow’s office is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. Additionally, the office manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States.
