William C. Lamar states attorney for the northern district of Mississippi

Veteran prosecutor William Chadwick “Chad’ Lamar was nominated by President Donald Trump on June 29, 2017, and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on November 9, 2017. William C. Lamar was then sworn into office by Chief United States District Judge Sharion Aycock on November 22, 2017. Attorney Lamar was highly recommended by U.S. Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker to be appointed as the top federal prosecutor, serving as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi.


Education and Bar Associations

William C. Lamar earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Millsaps College in 1986, received his Juris Doctorate at the University of Mississippi in 1989, and his Legum Magister at Boston University in 1990. Atty Lamar is an active member of the Mississippi Bar since September 28, 1989.


Legal Career

The loyalty of William C. Lamar to the District of Mississippi began as he embarked on his legal career as a Law Clerk under the Senior United States District Judge Neal B. Biggers, Jr., of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, where he worked for one year from 1990 to 1991.

In 1991, U.S. Attorney Lamar’s career experienced an upturn as he began working at the United States Attorney’s Office as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. During this time, he was responsible for litigating civil and criminal matters involving the United States, often handling high-profile cases. In 2008, William C. Lamar became the Senior Litigation Counsel and Appellate Chief. His line of work then focused on handling appeals from criminal convictions, which allowed him to learn substantive criminal law. Being a part of the Criminal Division entails representing the United States in criminal matters before the U.S. District Court. Atty Lamar worked on a wide variety of criminal prosecutions, including cyber-crime, fraud, public corruption, international and domestic terrorism, violent crimes, narcotics trafficking, and other complex white-collar cases.

Before serving as the U.S. Attorney William C. Lamar performed duties as the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi, from 2014 to 2017. He was in charge of the attorneys, while also prosecuting criminal cases in Superior and Municipal Courts, to represent the Northern District of Mississippi.


Honors and Awards

Lamar’s service to the Northern District of Mississippi of about 30 years is not be disregarded. William C. Lamar has received several honors and awards, including the Executive Office for United States Attorneys Director’s Award, which he received in 2004.


Some of His Projects as U.S. Attorney

Being the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi, Attorney Lamar has the vital responsibility of being the chief federal prosecutor of the District. On September 9, 2019, the first-ever statewide effort to prevent and combat human trafficking has been launched. The Mississippi Human Trafficking Council is a program with a mission to first and foremost, prevent human trafficking. It is also a victim-centered, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative model aiming to prosecute criminals of human trafficking. Atty Lamar states that “preventing and combatting human trafficking is a priority in the District and across our State.”

His other efforts as the chief federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Mississippi includes the “Operation Triple Beam,” which focuses on reducing crime in the Golden Triangle Area. This operation plan allowed a 149 arrest in North Mississippi by the use of intelligence to allow the systematic eradication of violent fugitives in the District.


Office Jurisdiction

As the incumbent United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi, Attorney Lamar works with several agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency – Criminal Investigation Division, to assure quality service to the District. Furthermore, William C. Lamar oversees a staff composing of 14 criminal matters prosecutor, six civil matters prosecutors, and 26 support personnel – a total of 46 staff. The office of the United States Attorney is not only responsible for litigating criminal cases, but also responsible for managing civil cases involving the United States, and recovers debts owed to the United States.
