William J. Powell
William J. Powell, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia, has quite a different story than most others in the USA’s judicial system. Born in Manhasset, New York, Powell had never met a lawyer in his life and didn’t want to be one either when he was young. But his life took an unexpected turn during his college years, and he ended up choosing a career that he never thought he would.

Educational Background
Due to his humble beginnings, William J. Powell was the first one in his family to get a college degree. He received it from Salem College in 1982. He then developed an interest in law and pursued his J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1985.
Professional Career
William J. Powell’s career began when he became a member of the Jackson Kelly PLLC. He then held office as the Assistant U.S. Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia. By 2017, he was working as the Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. It was there that President Donald Trump nominated him for the Attorney of the Northern District of West Virginia on August 3, 2017. He is the 28th person to hold this position and has made his name with his efforts.
Powell is one of the top-ranking federal law enforcement officers in the Northern District of West Virginia and presides at four district attorney offices. Powell and his team of prosecutors keenly lookout for cases regarding public corruption, narcotics, child exploitation, terrorism, and firearms in the Northern District of West Virginia.
According to Powell, issues on the top of his list of priorities are the opioid epidemic and violent crimes that are tainting the Northern District of West Virginia. Powell’s drive to bring justice, reduce crimes, and make his district a safer place can be seen in his work. William J. Powell spends most of his time collaborating with the task forces and law enforcement of all the units so they can arrest all those who are a threat to society.
Achievements
In addition to his official positions, Powell has remained an active member in all areas of law. William J. Powell is a former President of the West Virginia Bar. Currently, he is a Fellow at the American College of Trial Lawyers, the West Virginia Bar Foundation, and the American Bar Association Foundation. His passion for his work helped him achieve the status of a leader in many communities and professional organizations in the judicial system of the USA.
