The first African American attorney to hold the highest position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana has taken the seat. Zachary A. Myers made history as he was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana on November 15, 2021. The veteran federal prosecutor took the oath of office with the orchestration of United States District Court Chief Judge Tanya Walton Pratt. Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official Zachary Myers was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden on July 26, 2021, and was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate by Voice Vote on September 30, 2021. He is to replace the acting attorney John E. Childress, who served as the interim Chief Federal Prosecutor for the Southern District of Indiana for about a year following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Joshua Minkler on November 18, 2020.

Educational Background

U.S. Attorney Zachary Myers earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Stanford University, graduating in June 2003. He then pursued higher education and attended George Washington University, where he received his Master of Arts Degree in Political Management in May 2005. Finally, he studied law at the Georgetown University Law Center, acquiring his Juris Doctorate in May 2008.

Early Professional Career

Prior to undertaking a legal practice, U.S. Attorney Myers launched a professional career as an intern in the Office of Congresswoman Julia M. Carson (IN-7) from September 2003 to July 2004. Shortly after, he became the Field Director for Julia Carson for Congress and was appointed as a Legislative Correspondent in the Office of Congresswoman Julia M. Carson from May to August 2005.

Internships

Upon settling in law school, Top Federal Prosecutor Zachary Myers launched his legal career and joined the United States District Court for the District of Columbia as a Legal Extern under the Honorable Reggie B. Walton from October 2006 to April the following year. Through the rest of his law school years, U.S. Attorney Myers remained with the Baker & Daniels LLP (now Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP) as a Summer Associate, working in parts from May to August 2006, and from May to July 2007.

Private Practice

U.S. Attorney Myers formally began serving as an attorney in September 2008, succeeding his graduation from the Georgetown University Law Center and acquiring his Juris Doctorate. He returned to become an Associate in the Business Litigation and White-Collar Defense and Internal Investigations groups in the Indianapolis office of the Baker & Daniels, LLP, serving in the capacity for almost three years, until May 2011. For the duration of his employment at the Baker & Daniels, To Federal Prosecutor Zachary Myers represented businesses and individuals in matters involving commercial litigation, internal and governmental investigations, enforcement actions, and state and federal criminal prosecutions. His work as a prosecutor in the Business Litigation and White-Collar Defense and Internal Investigations groups covered and specialized in criminal investigations and prosecutions, along with internal investigations and commercial litigation and disputes.

Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana

In June 2011, U.S. Attorney Myers shifted from private practice to government service and joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana. He was welcomed as an Assistant United States Attorney and was tasked to represent the United States of America in over 130 prosecutions, including five jury trials and fourteen appeals. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the office’s General Crime Unit for approximately three years, through April 2014, leading investigations and prosecutions of a wide variety of federal offenses such as child exploitation, computer crime, environmental matters, fraud, national security offenses, public corruption, and violent crime. Top Federal Prosecutor Myers also served as the District’s Asset Forfeiture Coordinator prior to moving to continue being a career prosecutor in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.

Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland

In the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Top Federal Prosecutor Myers primarily performed duties as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Office’s Major Crimes Unit for four years, from April 2014 to June 2018. In this capacity, he managed an array of criminal prosecutions ranging from computer crimes to identity theft, child exploitation, fraud, immigration matters, sex trafficking, and violent crime. Through the years, he was promoted and appointed as the Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (CHIP) prosecutor of the Baltimore Division and the District’s National Security Cybercrime Specialist. In July 2018, U.S. Attorney Myers assisted in formulating the scope and mission of the newly created National Security & Cybercrime Section of the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. Given his dedication and knowledge in promoting the Office’s recently developed section, U.S. Attorney Myers was chosen to become the first Cybercrime Counsel of the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. In the next four years, he worked closely with federal law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Intelligence Community components as he managed a caseload of prosecutions involving complex and transnational cybercrime investigations. Apart from his prosecutorial duties as the first Cybercrime Counsel, U.S. Attorney Myers led an expanded team of cyber-specialist CHIP prosecutors across all of the District’s prosecuting units while also serving on the CHIP Working Group and in the Provider Issues Working Group organized by the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Main Justice’s Criminal Division. United States Attorney Zachary Myers has had a significant contribution to the growth and development of the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. In addition to spearheading the office’s National Security & Cybercrime Unit, U.S. Attorney Myers also co-founded the Dark Market and Cryptocurrency Crime Task Force of the district in August 2020, which paved ways for the investigation and combat of offenses enabled by illicit online marketplaces and cryptocurrency in partnership with a number of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. While handling the pandemic crisis, U.S. Attorney Myers was given additional responsibilities. He was named the Criminal litigation Coordinator of the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland in August 2020. In this role, he accomplished several presentations and training to educate and inform the public sector and all local, state, and federal law enforcement officials and prosecutors.

Following his graduation from law school, U.S. Attorney Myers was admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana since October 2008 and in the State of Maryland since July 2015. Furthermore, he was admitted in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in October 2009; in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in June 2014; in the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana in October 2008; and in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in April 2014. Top Federal Prosecutor also maintains active memberships in the Federal Bar Association, Indiana State Bar Association, Indianapolis Bar Association, Marion County (Indiana) Bar Association, and Monumental City (Baltimore) Bar Association.
