Cook County’s Anti-Drug Poster Contest

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez was accepting submissions for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office – Annual Anti-Drug Poster Contest, where sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students from across Cook County are all encouraged to submit their entries of art that demonstrate different constructive and supportive ways on how to avoid experimenting with illegal drugs, especially discussing this matter with students of their age, and raising awareness among everyone else.

Each year, over 1000 students design posters are being submitted by junior-high-school students for the Annual Anti-Drug Poster Contest, in which 13 winners are chosen to form the calendar with the theme of drug prevention. The calendar developed through this competition is distributed throughout the County in hopes that the message of the posters will reach not only the youth, but also adults that engage or interested in getting involved in the use of drugs, and other drug activities.

“Through the distribution of these calendars we hope: to reach thousands of students in Cook County and beyond with meaningful and inspirational messages from their peers encouraging them to work hard, stay in school, and stay away from drugs,” said Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

The 2013 Annual Anti-Drug Poster Contest marked the 29th celebration of this event sponsored by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Winning entries are selected by a blue-ribbon panel of judges specifically chosen for the year. In 2011, winners of the competition had their art featured in the calendar published by the State’s Attorney’s Office. Additionally, they received a savings bond from the Bank of America, scholarships from the School of the Art Institute, as well as an assortment of tickets to various performances.

Guidelines for the Annual Anti-Drug Poster Contest may be seen on the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office website. Additionally, different schools across the County received a packet of information regarding the contest. Students submitted their poster entries and entry form through their school and their school’s art teacher.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez expressed her gratitude to the students who have submitted their entries to the competition, as well as asserted that the Office is doing their best to combat drug-related crime and violence. “We work hard each and every day in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to fight the escalating problems of drugs in our communities, and the prosecution of drug-related crime is a top priority. We also recognize that education is key to prevention and to helping out students stay away from drugs and on a healthy and positive track in their lives. I want to thank the hundreds of students who participate in the annual Anti-Drug Poster Contest,” said State’s Attorney Alvarez.
