Press Release - Evanston Man Faces Sex Trafficking Charges

Evanston man was charged with human-trafficking related felony offenses after he took in a 14-year old runaway. The man allegedly had sex with the minor, sexually and physically assaulted her, and coerced the young child into getting involved with prostitution.

Donzell Mintz, 21, was held accountable for performing human trafficking, especially of a minor, and was subsequently charged with Involuntary Sexual Servitude of a Minor (Class X Felony), Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 Felony), and Aggravated Domestic Battery (Class 2 Felony).

Investigations revealed that a young girl ran away from home in the late of August, and onto Chicago’s South Side. The young lady came across the defendant, who reportedly befriended the child and offered her a place to stay. A few days later, the defendant decided to move from Chicago to Evanston with the minor, where he began his plot for exploiting the young child.

The defendant was said to not only have forced the young child into engaging in sexual acts in exchange of money but also coerced the minor into engaging in sexual intercourse with himself on numerous occasions, over the course of the three weeks the child was under his jurisdiction. Moreover, it was reported that the young victim was also exploited to commit to drug sales.

Further investigations revealed that on September 18, 2013, the defendant had an argument with the young victim, to which the defendant struck the minor in the face in such forceful way that it resulted to multiple injuries, including breaking her jaw and multiple teeth, which required to be repaired through surgery.

Involved in a 2011 robbery conviction and indicted for Aggravated Robbery, the defendant was said to be currently in parole during the prosecution of sex trafficking. Due to this incident, the defendant was held without bail for the parole violation. Furthermore, on September 24, 2013, Cook County Judge Jeffrey Warnick set the bail for the defendant to $600,000 bond for the human-trafficking related felony charges, during a bond hearing at the Skokie Courthouse. The defendant was expected in another court appearance in the Skokie District Court on October 16, 2013.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez commended the Evanston Police Department for their assistance and collaborative work in the investigation and prosecution of the case.

With the provided criminal documents containing allegations that are not evidence of guilt, the public is reminded that the defendant shall be presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the state has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
