Ryan K. Buchanan has been confirmed to be the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. On May 2, 2022, United States District Judge Thomas W. Thrash, Jr. administered the oath of office of Attorney Ryan Buchanan as he was sworn in as the new Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official for the Northern District of Georgia. President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. nominated Attorney Buchanan to be a U.S. Attorney on November 15, 2021, which the United States Senate confirmed through Voice Vote on April 27, 2022. U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan assumes the highest position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, officially succeeding former U.S. Attorney Byung J. Pak. Former U.S. Attorney Pak resigned abruptly on January 4, 2021, and was replaced by Former U.S. Attorney Bobby L. Christine and Former Acting U.S. Attorney Kurt R. Erskine on January 5, 2021, and then on February 1, 2021, respectively.

Educational Background and Legal Clerkship

U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan is a graduate of Samford University, from where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management in 2001. The subsequent year, he attended law school and joined the Vanderbilt University Law School, receiving his Doctor of Law in 2005. His legal career was initialized upon his appointment as a Law Clerk under The Honorable Inge P. Johnson of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Performing a wide range of tasks, including accomplishing legal research, drafting memoranda and court opinions, proofreading, and citing checking, U.S. Attorney Buchannan served as an assistant to Judge Johnson from August 2005 to July 2006.

Private Practice

After working a year in government service, Top Federal Prosecutor Ryan Buchanan shifted his legal career to private practice and joined McGuireWoods LLP as an Associate in October 2006. For the next three and ten years, he worked as a lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, where he focused on employment and labor litigation.

U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama

United States Attorney Buchanan was first introduced to the U.S. Department of Justice in August 2010. He was initially appointed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. Top Federal Prosecutor Buchanan remained in this position for approximately three years before moving to the State of Georgia in May 2013.

U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia

Top Federal Prosecutor Buchanan spent most of his legal career serving the Northern District of Georgia. He was primarily appointed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia but was eventually assigned to leadership roles. In January 2017, Top Federal Prosecutor Ryan Buchanan was named as the district’s National Security and Anti-Terrorism Coordinator with the task of advancing the counterterrorism objectives and national security of the United States. The following year, in January 2018, he was named the Deputy Chief of the Violent Crime and National Security Section of the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. In this capacity, U.S. Attorney Buchanan was responsible for overseeing a wide variety of prosecutions and initiatives involving the Department of Justice’s most important strategic goals and objectives – to prevent, disrupt, and defeat domestic and international terrorist operations even before they occur. At the same time, U.S. Attorney Buchanan was in charge of pursuing an aggressive commitment to the investigation and prosecution of matters involving child exploitation and human trafficking within the district’s jurisdiction. Top Federal Prosecutor Ryan Buchanan held both titles for the remainder of his legal career in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia until he was named Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official.

As a federal prosecutor with extensive experience, U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan has dealt with all matters and processes involved in investigating and prosecuting organized crime and foreign terrorist organizations. Throughout his service as a prosecutor in the United States Department of Justice, Top Federal Prosecutor Buchanan has successfully tried an array of criminal cases, emphasizing cases of foreign terrorist organizations and domestic terrorist attempts to acquire weapons of mass destruction. In addition, U.S. Attorney Buchanan has also been involved in investigating and prosecuting cases such as carjacking, exploitation of children, kidnapping, racketeering, robbery, and other violent crimes.

As Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official, U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan is responsible for overseeing the investigation and prosecution of all federal criminal and civil cases brought in the district on behalf of the United States. Together with U.S. Attorney Buchanan in the mission of enforcing the criminal laws of the United States and representing the interest of the United States in civil proceedings are approximately 250 dedicated Assistant U.S. Attorneys and support personnel. Apart from prosecuting a broad array of federal crimes, the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia demonstrates its commitment to serve and protect the residents of the 46 counties within the jurisdiction of the district through engaging in prevention efforts such as educating the citizens, uplifting students and adults to avoid criminal conduct, and providing intensive re-entry program for ex-offenders.
