Professional Career
Right out of Law School, Herdman joined the New York County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney. After five years, he became an Associate at a private LLP for a year before joining the United States Navy. In the Navy, Herdman retired as a Lieutenant after seven years of service.
In 2006, Herdman joined the United States Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney. Seven years later, he became a partner at Jones Day. He only left when he received a nomination by President Donald Trump in 2017 to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
Herdman currently holds the title of Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
With his extensive experience and knowledge of the law, Herdman was also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University and a Council Member of the Village of Chagrin Falls.
Career Highlights
Herdman is the top federal officer at the Attorney Office of the Northern District of Ohio. He supervises 200 employees and together, they represent the United States in 40 counties of Ohio
Herdman has prosecuted many crimes in the various capacities and positions he held during his career. But his most praiseworthy trial was that of the homegrown terror cell supporting al Qaeda. Another highlight of his career was being part of the team that prosecuted five self-proclaimed convicted anarchists. These criminals got caught and prosecuted for their attempted use of explosives on the Cleveland area bridge.
Herdman is a well-respected attorney in the U.S. Judicial System for his knowledge and experiences. He was appointed in the United States Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of the U.S. Attorneys and currently serves as the Vice-Chair. The committee suggests, introduces, and develops strategies and ideas for effective prosecution throughout the country.
Role in the Community
The current United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Justin Herdman, always knew what he wanted. His goal was clear from the beginning, and he tried to fight the criminals who had oppressed others for a long time. When Herdman got the chance, he expedited the prosecutions of violent crimes, drug trafficking, and illegal immigrants. He also looked into reforming the local police department to keep them from violating civil rights and using excessive force.
The U.S. Attorney believes in all the causes that bring peace. One cause that is close to the Attorney’s heart is child safety from firearms. He had joined others to launch the “Project ChildSafe Cleveland” to keep the little ones safe from the guns at home.
During his oath ceremony, Herdman mentioned his excitement to seek justice on behalf of the people of Northern Ohio. He continues to fight against the opioid epidemic and violent crimes in Ohio to maintain peace in the counties.
Educational Background
Justin Herdman attended Ohio University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1996. He then went to the University of Glasgow and received his M.Phil. In 1998. For his Law Degree, Herdman went to Harvard Law School and earned his Juris Doctor in 2001.
