David J. Freed

Presidential nominee, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania David J. Freed, was nominated by President Donald Trump on September 8, 2017. U.S. Attorney Freed’s nomination was reported favorably by the Committee on the Judiciary on November 9, 2017, and was confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on November 15, 2017. Administered by Chief Judge Christopher C. Conner of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, David J. Freed was sworn into office on November 27, 2017, superseding the interim U.S. Attorney Bruce D. Brandler.

Education and Volunteer Experience

David Freed is a cum laude graduate of Washington and Lee University, earning his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Arts in History and Journalism. Subsequently, he received his Juris Doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law. U.S. Attorney Freed is a graduate of Camp Hill High School and has served for the institution in several ways, including being a former member of the Camp Hill Lions Club and being the President of the Lion Foundation. In his term, he was able to raise funds of about $15 million from Grace Milliman Pollock, to build a performing arts center in her name.

Membership and Associations

Giving importance to the youth, David J. Freed was a former Honorary Board Member of the Keystone Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and of the Fight Crime Invest in Kids, which aimed to coach baseball and basketball of little league. In the professional realm, Atty Freed was a member of the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania District Attorneys as a Secretary or Treasurer, and as Chairman of the Education and Training Committee.

Teachings

An active public speaker, Attorney Freed, is often asked to give lectures on numerous legal matters focusing on his field of expertise such as juvenile justice, sexual assault, victim’s rights, and services, domestic violence, among others. He was an adjunct faculty at the National College of District Attorneys National Advocacy Center in Columbia and has given lectures at The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Institute and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute.

Legal Career

Straight out of law school, David Freed worked in private practice, prosecuting insurance defense litigation. Attorney Freed has an extensive background in public service, which began as he served as a Law Clerk at the Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas under Honorable Judge Harold Sheely. In 1997, David J. Freed became Deputy Prosecutor at the York County, serving there for a year, then becoming an Assistant District Attorney at the Cumberland County from 1998 to 2000.

In 2001, David Freed became a First Assistant District Attorney at the Cumberland County, prosecuting cases involving felonies, complex drug trafficking, homicide, and arson cases. Throughout his legal career, Atty Freed has handled various litigation matters of both criminal and civil cases. He has worked on numerous high-profile cases, including the first-degree murder of an 18-year-old cold case homicide. David Freed has also testified regarding perspectives on juvenile justice, closing loopholes in Megan’s Law, “sexting” legislation, among others.

Prior to his unsuccessful campaign for State Attorney General in 2012, US. Attorney Freed was appointed as the Cumberland County District Attorney in 2006. A year later, he was elected to a full term and subsequently, re-elected to the position in 2011. Other than prosecuting murders and defending national insurance companies, David J. Freed has put the focus on public funds to improve case processing and investigations by using county-wide operations planned and developed through a task force model. As a result, Cumberland County conducts in-house scientific testing of both blood and suspected illegal drugs.

Elections and Republican Party

David J. Freed lost the 2012 Republican Election for the Pennsylvania Attorney General. His decision was established as he worked and supported several candidates of the Republican Party, formerly serving as Chairman of the Cumberland County Governors Club. Furthermore, he has served as a surrogate for the Pennsylvania Grand Only Party’s statewide judicial candidates. David J. Freed has served for Justice Thomas Saylor, Justice Michael Eakin, and the 2011 Appellate Court candidates. Through Commonwealth Club, David Freed served as an active annual supporter of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania and became a regular participant in the Republican State Committee’s judicial evaluation panels. In 2013, Atty Freed also served as the President of the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association.

Office Jurisdiction

To serve a four-year term as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, David Freed oversees 33 counties of Pennsylvania. In his 14^th year of being a Cumberland County prosecutor, Freed will continue to preside the highly qualified and experienced staff of the U.S. Attorney’s office.
