Jay E. Town
Jay E. Town is the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama for the U.S. Department of Justice. John “Jay” Edward Town was born on August 26, 1973. He is an American lawyer and government official. Town and his spouse Dana have a daughter, Gracelyn.
Attorney Town was the nomination by the United States President Donald J. Trump for the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. Trump nominated him in June 2017. He was among the first of the three U.S. Attorneys to be nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate
Jay E. Town was elected to the position by the United States Senate on August 3, 2017. On August 11, 2017, he began serving after he took his oath of office as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, by Chief District Judge Karon O. Bowdre. The position was before held by Joyce White Vance, who retired from that role in January.
Town’s area of operation covers 31 northern Alabama counties, including Huntsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Florence, and Scottsboro.

Role in The Community
Jay E. Town is also the Co-Chair of the Criminal Justice System Personnel Intersection Working Group on the Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice. He is also managing the role of the Chair of the Attorney General’s Servicemembers and Veterans Rights Subcommittee. He is the placeholder as a member of the Management, Performance and Personnel Subcommittee, and as well the China Initiative Working Group of the Attorney General.
Additionally, he is a great contributor to many charitable boards. Mr. Town is a member of the Board of Directors America’s Warrior Partnership, which is a national organization that empowers communities to empower veterans through community integration. He is a member since 2014.
Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation
Since 2014, Town has been the Member of Boards of Directors in the foundation driven by the living Medal of Honor recipients, the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. It is a national organization promoting educational, patriotic, and veterans’ initiatives. From the year 2006-2015, he served as the Member, Board of Directors in Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama. He also served there as the Chairman for two years. He is an original board member of The Bennie Adkins Foundation, which is responsible for providing scholarships to veterans in Alabama.
The United States Attorney Jay E. Town is even associated with the Board of Directors of Veteran Success Resource Group (VSRG), which is a nonprofit organization that works to provide professional and personal resources for Veterans and their Families in a distinctive networking environment.
Jay E. Town is the sole U.S. Attorney member of the Attorney General’s Violent Crime Reduction Coordinating Committee.
Law Career
Jay Town is a member of the State Bars of Indiana, New Jersey and Alabama, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Town served as a Major (Judge Advocate General) in the United States Marine Corps for twelve years from the year 1996 to 2008. He, during this tenure, earned the rank of Major. His work in the United States Marine Corps involved Prosecution, Trial Counsel, legal assistance, Laws of Armed Conflict advisor (OEF/OIF), Rules of Engagement trainer and advisor (OEF/OIF), pre-deployment legal assistance, pre-deployment ROE/LOAC training, investigations of violations of LOAC/ROE.
For three years between 2002 to 2005, Town worked as an associate at McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP in Morristown, New Jersey. The law firm’s practice area mainly includes the commercial defense of major pharmaceutical, commercial, and surety companies involved in litigation with federal agencies.
Town had a long association of twelve years with Madison County District Attorney’s Office in Huntsville. Huntsville is also the city where Town is currently residing. He served there as the Senior Prosecutor from Feb 2005 to Aug 2017. Town looked after violent crime and robbery cases. He also helped implement a Madison County Veterans Court. It is one of the first such diversionary courts in Alabama devoted to handling the physical and mental health requirements of veterans in the criminal justice system.
Town’s most noted role was as the co-counsel in the case that involved lethal shooting of Huntsville Police Department officer Dan Golden. The accused Benito Albarran was convicted in 2008 for the crime. Albarran was awarded the death penalty for killing Golden.
He also served the Alabama State Republican Party’s executive committee.
For three years, Town was the Adjunct Professor, Department of Political Science at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. From the year 2008-2011, he was involved in Graduate Studies, Executive War Powers and Laws of Armed Conflict at the University of Alabama.
Academic Background
Jay Town obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and International Relations. He completed his B.A. degree in the year 1995 from the University of Notre Dame du Lac, Notre Dame, Indiana. Jay E. Town received his Juris Doctor of Law (J.D.) – Criminal from Seton Hall University School of Law, Newark, New Jersey, in 1998.
Awards
Jay Town was awarded the Medal of Honor by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for his contribution in many charitable activities.
