Education and Early Career
Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, U.S. Attorney Jonathan Ross attended the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate. Prior to becoming a federal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Jonathan Ross was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Pulaski County, where he served for almost ten years, from 2003 to 2012. In this position, he provided legal advice on a wide variety of issues to employees and officials of the County, particularly discussing bidding, county assistance, federal bankruptcy, foreclosures, negotiating and reviewing contracts, ordinances, as well as planning and zoning issues. He also represented the County in legal actions and litigation.
Legal Career
Following his service in the Pulaski County, U.S. Attorney Jonathan D. Ross joined the Texarkana Office and served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, and subsequently joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Arkansas for four years, from 2012 to 2016. U.S. Attorney Jonathan Ross later came to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas and became a First Assistant United States Attorney and now the interim U.S. Attorney.
As the First Assistant United States Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Hiland, Jonathan D. Ross had worked on a number of cases, focusing on high-profile cases and violent crimes within the district and along the cities surrounding the district. “We had just come through a year where two different 2-year-olds were murdered while riding in the backseat of mother’s or grandmother’s cars here in Little Rock,” U.S. Attorney Ross said. He further claimed that the homicide rate in the Eastern District of Arkansas had increased for the past couple of years, including in the summer of 2017 when a mass shooting, two blocks away from the Office, occurred at the Power Ultra Lounge.
Now the Chief Federal Prosecutor of the Eastern District of Arkansas, U.S. Attorney Jonathan D. Ross, asserted that his plans for the Office are to stay on the course that has been laid by former U.S. Attorney Hiland, which is to emphasize gun-possession cases. Additionally, U.S. Attorney Ross claims to have a ‘well-oiled machine’ within the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas. His main priority as of the moment is to keep the machine going, regardless of whether the next U.S. Attorney to be appointed will decide whether or not to retain the operations or bring change into the Office.
Court Admissions
Jonathan Ross is admitted to practice in several courts, including the Arkansas Eastern District Court, the Arkansas Western District Court, the Texas Eastern District Court, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Additionally, U.S. Attorney Ross is admitted to practice in The Supreme Court of Arkansas State.
