Ashley C. Hoff
Ashley Chapman Hoff is now the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official of the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas, following the stepping down of former U.S. Attorney Gregg N. Sofer, which was announced on January 26, 2020, as a part of the transition to President Joe Biden’s administration. By virtue of the Vacancies Reform Act, Acting U.S. Attorney Hoff will succeed Gregg Sofer, who was appointed to the role in October of 2020. The service of Ashley Hoff is expected to begin on February 7, 2020 officially. It shall last for 300 days, or until the Biden administration successfully appoints and confirms the new United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas.

Educational Background and Bar Admissions
A native Texan, U.S. Attorney Hoff graduated from the Texas Christian University in 1991. She earned her degree in Bachelor of Science, majoring in Secondary Education, emphasizing Government and Spanish. After receiving her undergraduate degree, U.S. Attorney Hoff studied law at the Baylor University School of Law, where she subsequently received her Doctor of Law in 1994. Since she graduated from law school, U.S. Attorney Hoff has been an active member of the State Bar of Texas.
Legal Career
With 26 years of remarkable service as a public servant and prosecutor, Ashley Hoff has diverse experience and knowledge in handling criminal cases in both state and federal courts. She began her intensive legal career and her faithful service in the government as an Assistant District Attorney in the Office of the District Attorney for Harris County. For a little over five years, U.S. Attorney Hoff focused her career on state criminal prosecutions, including handling legal proceedings involving a felony, juvenile, and misdemeanor cases. She remained in the District Attorney’s Office from January 1995 to April of 2000 and subsequently launched her federal prosecution career. United States Attorney Hoff joined the Office of the Texas Attorney General and served in the position of Assistant Attorney General for approximately 15 months, from April of 2000 to June of the following year. In this capacity, she worked as one of the eight specially-designated prosecutors in the State of Texas to focus on the prosecution of federal firearm offenses under the Texas EXILE violent crime reduction initiative. The Texas EXILE program is one of the approaches subject to the Project Safe Neighborhoods program – an enduring significant federal initiative across the nation that aims to reduce and eradicate violent crimes within the communities.
Prior to joining the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Ashley Hoff was first a part of the Houston Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas. She served in the position of Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Counterterrorism Unit of the Office – responsible for handling national security investigations that were vital at the time, particularly in response to the events of September 11, 2001. After a little less than three years of serving in the Southern District of Texas, Acting U.S. Attorney Hoff came to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas in December of 2003. She was first employed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Austin Division of the Office, where she dedicated about nine years of her legal career prosecuting a wide variety of federal offenses, including complex white-collar crimes, drug trafficking, firearms violations, health care fraud, identity theft, violent crimes, among others.
In July of 2012, she was promoted to chief of the Austin Division and remained in the leadership role for almost six years, until April of 2018. Ashley Hoff then became First Assistant United States Attorney to former U.S. Attorney John F. Bash and subsequently to former U.S. Attorney Gregg N. Sofer, following the United States Attorney’s adjustments Office for the Western District of Texas in 2020.

She has taken the Oath of Office at the federal courthouse in Austin, as administered by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman. Currently acting as the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer of the Western District of Texas, Ashley Hoff acknowledges and embraces the position’s immense responsibility. She expressed her appreciation to the Court for the opportunity and the honor of a lifetime, as U.S. Attorney Hoff has been given the privilege to work alongside the incredibly talented and dedicated staff of the Office of the United States Attorney.
Office Jurisdiction
Being a part of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas for more than 17 years, Ashley Chapman Hoff will continue to serve in the Office as Acting United States Attorney. She gained the responsibility of overseeing more than 150 talented Assistant U.S. Attorneys and approximately 150 dedicated support personnel assigned in the staffed branch offices in Alpine, Austin, Del Rio, El Paso Midland, San Antonio, and Waco. On top of that, she is in charge of leading the Office in prosecuting violations of federal law, including offenses involving firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, public corruption, and others. The Office of the United States Attorney shall also represent the federal government and its agencies in criminal prosecutions and civil matters where the United States is a party and recover all debts owed to the United States. Acting U.S. Attorney Hoff also bears the responsibility of protecting the Western District of Texas citizens, which encompasses 68 counties spanning about 93,000 miles.
